Bank of Russia: bank card market in the first half of 2009
According to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, in the first half of 2009, Russian banks have issued cards for individuals by 3.1 percent more than at the beginning of the year and it has totaled 122.897 million cards, thus in the second quarter we observed a 0.96 percent growth.
In the second quarter, card transactions of individuals in Russia and abroad totaled 2.278 trillion roubles, and it’s 10 percent more than in the first quarter. The number of transactions has increased by 13.9 percent as against of the first quarter of this year and totaled 618.435 million transactions.
Cash withdrawing has totaled 91 percent of all card transactions (2.078 trillion roubles). And all transactions in merchants have totaled 200.17 bn roubles, and have increased almost by 0.5 percent as against of the first quarter.
At the same time, in the first half of 2009, Russian banks have issued corporate cards by 9.9 percent more than at the beginning of the year, and it’s totaled 245,199 cards, in the second quarter we observed a 1.2 percent growth. In the second quarter, corporate card transactions totaled 3.103 million or 57.649 bn roubles. Cardholders withdrew cash on the sum of 24.892 bn roubles and paid goods and services in merchants on the sum of 32.757 bn roubles.
