Belarus: biometric passports to be introduced in 2 years
The Republic of Belarus intends to switch over to biometric passports. It is expected that the first documents with electronic chips will be already issued in 2011.
“Chip’s memory which is built in a cover of the passport, keeps a digital photo of its owner, – Anatoly Lanin, Deputy Chief of Department for Citizenship and Migration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus explains, – It also can keep records of owner’s digitized fingerprints, growth, weight and blood group.”
In July, 2009, within the terms of this project for the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus fingerprint scanners have been bought on the sum of more than $200,000. But biometric passports are not ready to be issued – it is necessary to build a chip producing center and to develop data recording system.
