Kazakhstan: all banks in the country together have issued 7.2 million cards
According to the National Bank of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as of September 1, 2009, all banks of the Republic have issued 7.2 million cards, and the number of cardholders has totaled 6.7 million persons. It is 7.5 and 7.7 percent (respectively) as much as at the same period of 2008. At present, 20 banks and Kazpochta (Kazakhstani post offices) issue payment cards in Kazakhstan.
Cards of international payment systems are the most popular ones in Kazakhstan. Their share is 97.9%, and cards of local systems – only 2.1%. As of September 1, 2008, the proportion was 96.9 % and 3.1 %, respectively.
In August 2009, the volume of transactions with use of cards, issued by Kazakhstan issuers has totaled 216.1 billion tenge ($1.8 billion). It is 9.5 percent as much as against of August 2008.
The number of transactions for the same period has totaled 9.3 million and it has increased by 10.7 percent as against of August 2008.
