Ukraine: development of card business amid the crisis

Ukrainian Processing Center (UPC) has announced results of the Ukrainian payment card market analysis.

According to UPC, from September, 2008 till September, 2009 the card payment turnover in merchants has increased by 30% as against of the similar period of the last year. Thus, in supermarkets the card payment turnover has increased by 157%, and in clothing shops – by 16%. At the same time, the majority of travel agencies and gas stations now have POS terminals.

The average transaction amount has been hardly changed and it varies within 800–900 grivnas (about $100–110) per purchase.
The average amount of on–line purchase totals 85.94 grivnas ($10.62).

For 2009, the number of payment cards, issued by banks – UPC clients – has increased by 0.01%. It is much less, than a year ago: from October, 2007 till October, 2008 the growth exceeded 36%.

The gain of ATMs in the Ukrainian banks has slowed down also. If from October, 2007 till October, 2008 the number of ATMs established by banks – UPC clients –, has increased by 30%, then for the same period in 2008-2009 the expansion rate of banks’ ATM networks has slowed down up to 12%.
