According to Michael Smolkin, Head of the North-West Customs of the Russian Border Services Agency, in 2010 they plan to start equipping the largest border entry points of the Northwest federal district, particularly, at the airports of St.-Petersburg, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Petrozavodsk, and also the basic automobile border entry points – Torfyanovka (Russia – Finland) and Brusnichnoye (Russia – Finland), with special facilities for biometric passports control.
Besides, the border entry point serving the high-speed route St.-Petersburg – Helsinki, will be also equipped with such facilities.
For the first 9 months of 2009 in the Northwest federal district foreign travel passports of new generation have been issued by 191,000 pieces as much as for the similar period of 2008.
