Spanish bank Santander gives free ATM use to U.K. account holders

Santander, the Spanish bank that now operates Abbey and Alliance & Leicester, has announced that its UK bank account holders will no longer pay to use its ATMs in Spain.

As of January 11th 2010, all of Santander's bank account customers will be entitled to fee-free cash withdrawals from all 4,300 of its Spanish ATMs to mark the commencement of the rebranding of its Abbey and Bradford & Bingley businesses in the UK.

This means that a UK customer who makes three €130 (£117) withdrawals while holidaying in Spain will now save £15.51, as long as they remember to use a Santander cash machine.

With both the cash handling fee and the foreign exchange fee being abolished, Santander estimates that its customers could save over £2m per year.

"Spain has always been a popular destination with Britons and we wanted to reward the loyalty of our customers by saving them some money when they visit," explained Alison Brittain, executive director of UK retail distribution at Santander.
