The number of cards issued in Kazakhstan grew in 2009 by 6.2%

According to the National Bank of Kazakhstan, as of January 1, 2010, Kazakhstan banks issued 7.614 million cards, and it was by 6.2 % as much as against of January 1, 2009 (7.173 million cards). The number of card holders grew by 7.4% – up to 7.135 million people against 6.642 million a year ago.

International payment cards are still the most widespread ones in the Republic – 97.9% of all cards issued, and cards of local systems hold only a 2.1% share. As of January 1, 2009, the first held a 97.5% share of the market and the last – 2.5%.

In December, 2009, all transactions on cards of Kazakhstan issuers totaled 300.6 billion tenge ($2 billion). It was by 18.4% as much as against of December, 2008.

As of January 1, 2010, 20 banks of Kazakhstan and Kazakh Post were card issuers.
