National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) announced the main trend of payment systems’ development in the country.
According to the results of Ukrainian banks activity at payment cards market in Q1, 2009, the total number of active cards – more than 44 million. The number of cards using which cardholders made at least one transaction reduced by 20% from 38 million to 30 million. The number of ATMs increased and reached 28,000 units, and the number of POS-terminals reduced by almost 10,000 devices and amounted to about 107,000.
NBU also reported about current position of National System of Mass Electronic Payments (NSMEP). To the beginning of May, 2009, 53 institutions are participants of NSMEP, among them there are 51 banks (including NBU) and 2 non-banking institutions. NSMEP works in commercial operation mode since 2004, turnover of the System amounts to almost UAH83 billion (USD10 billion).
