The national payment card system “Mir” was created in 2014 in response to Western sanctions imposed after the integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation. The Bank of Russia implemented the system against the possibility of disconnection of cards of international payment systems.

Yet today, Mir cards can be used in Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

On July 26, the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) announced that ATMs in Cuba began accepting Mir cards. At least four other countries – Myanmar, Nigeria, Bahrain, and Thailand – have confirmed that they are considering acceptance of Mir cards in their territory. In April, the Bank of Russia informed that, apart from Cuba, the Mir cards acceptance was negotiated with two more countries, with their names not disclosed.
