Which bank cards and contactless payment services keep working in Russia

(no votes)

All Visa and Mastercard cards issued by Russian banks will continue to work in Russia in the ordinary and usual course until their expiration date. The money in the bank accounts to which these cards are linked will be protected and fully available.

After the expiration of Visa and Mastercard cards, banks will replace them with MIR cards. Transactions on these cards are processed by the National Payment Card System within our country, and sanctions do not affect them. Customers’ money on the respective card accounts are fully protected and available.

MIR cardholders in Russia will be able to perform transactions at ATMs, pay with cards, make card-to-card transfers within the country. In most countries abroad, however, such cards will not work. They also will not be accepted for payments in foreign online stores. The exceptions are those countries where MIR cards are already accepted today, namely Turkey, Vietnam, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

Apple Pay and Google Pay will not support payments with Visa and Mastercard cards, though they can be used for standard contact or contactless payments throughout Russia.

Apart from that, the Mir Pay mobile payment service can be used for contactless payments on a smartphone. The service can be installed on an Android smartphone. Mir Pay allows usual payment transactions, and Mir cards issued by more than 80 Russian banks can be connected to the service today.
